For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from Him, that he who loveth God love his brother also" (I John 4:20-21). Therefore we must regard the commandments of the second table with the same seriousness with which we treat those of the first table.

The fifth commandment concerns God's gift of authority. It teaches us that we may not disobey or disrespect those placed by God in authority over us. It requires us to honor, obey, and submit to their authority.

The fifth commandment mentions the honoring of our fathers and mothers, as they are the first, most prominent, and most influential authority figures in our lives. The Lord, however, has delegated authority to "fathers" to rule and govern not only at home, but in all spheres of societal life. All "fathers" are to govern under God, who is the ultimate "Father." God's authority and Word are absolute; a human "father's" authority is delegated. This truth is illustrated in the diagram below:



Those placed by God in authority positions are not to rule according to their own ideas and will. They are to rule for God, not
