CHRIST'S WORK AS KING

What an encouragement to bring all our struggles, fears, and difficulties to this High Priest! There is no sorrow, pain, or suffering that He cannot understand.

Jesus Christ reigns as King in a double respect. First, in a general sense as God, Christ rules over His creation by His providence. There is nothing outside of His government. Also, as a reward for His perfect obedience, Christ is given ruling power over all things. In this sense, He governs all things for the defense and enrichment of His Church. Christ's reigning over all things in heaven and earth is called Christ's Kingdom of Power. This kingdom is primarily physical.

Secondly, in a special sense as Mediator, Christ rules over His Church by His Word and Spirit. This kingship and kingdom is primarily spiritual. Jesus' reigning over His Church is named Christ's Kingdom of Grace.

The spiritual emphasis of the Kingdom of Grace can be observed from the kingdom's: spiritual origin - in heaven; spiritual realm -in the hearts of believers; spiritual emphasis - in the salvation of sinners; spiritual means of government - by Word and Spirit; spiritual citizenship - of God's children; spiritual boundaries - of God's Church; spiritual throne - in heaven; spiritual birth - by regeneration; and spiritual communion - in prayer.

This does not mean, however, that Christ's Kingdom of Grace will not influence the physical world and civil life with its laws, governments, and institutions, for it will.

As persons begin to serve Christ as King, they will desire to do His will and serve Him in all aspects of life. God's Church is called to be a "salting salt" and an "enlightening light" to the world. But the primary focus and working of the Kingdom of Grace is spiritual -God and the souls of men. It will seek converts through the spiritual sword of the Spirit, not the physical sword of man.

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.

- Matthew 28:18

Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if My kingdom were of this world, then would My servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is My kingdom not from hence.

- John 18:36

Neither shall they say, Lo here! or 10 there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

- Luke 17:21

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put My laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts.

- Hebrews 8:lOa

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

- Matthew 5: 13-16
