Down what "steep hill" are all unbelievers traveling? Why do they continually "increase their speed" as they descend? While the unregenerate miss a "braking system" that operates properly, God's law can be a "restraining, braking influence" in their lives. How? Why is this a precious, although non-saving, benefit?

In the lives of true believers, the law is instrumental in working: conviction of misery, need for Christ's deliverance, and guidance for thankfulness.

God the Holy Spirit uses the law as a means to uncover a person's sin and to convict him of his state of misery. The Holy Spirit implants spiritual light in the sinner's heart and uses the law as a mirror in which the sinner can see his condition.

A missionary doctor wished to treat a badly infected wound on the forehead of one of the natives. But no matter how terribly he or others described the native's condition, the man would not agree to treatments. He believed that his condition was not as bad as the others were saying.

"If only I had a mirror," the doctor thought. That evening some visiting friends arrived at his village, and while talking together, he discovered that one of his visitors had a hand mirror in her luggage. "Tomorrow, when it is light, I will visit him again," the doctor thought to himself.

Observance of the law cannot save a person from God's eternal judgment, but it can save them from many temporal judgments. What does this statement mean?

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

- Romans 7:7

Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

- Romans 3:20

Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.

- Romans 5:20
